Some Facts:

- The Coquitlam River is the 6th most endangered river in British Columbia due to, "excessive sediment loads most of which is caused by gravel mining" (ORCBC, 2006).

- "It’s estimated that for close to 200 days each year, siltation levels along much of the river are considered to be at levels deemed harmful to fish" (ORCBC, 2006).

- Soil removal permits are renewed for gravel companies every two years by Coquitlam city council despite these companies' poor environmental records.

- No level of government including Municipal, Provincial, or Federal are holding gravel companies operating in the Coquitlam River Valley accountable for their polluting actions.

What role does the DFO pledge:

- "Study, conserve and protect aquatic ecosystems"

- "Ensure compliance with environmental standards and regulations in support of economic development and other activities."
